#PassportToMP: Nikki’s Work-Away Adventure to Cap Cana
This year, my family and I made the most of our month-long “work away” vacation benefit by heading to Cap Cana, Dominican Republic. With my husband and our two little ones, ages 2 and 3, we traded the daily hustle for serene beaches, vibrant local culture, and unforgettable experiences.
We stayed in a beachfront condo, where waking up to the sound of waves became our new normal. The kids had a blast splashing in the pools, building sandcastles, and collecting seashells on the shore. It was the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure for all of us. My view for the month made work a breeze!
Exploring the local markets and bakeries was a highlight of our trip. The markets were bursting with colour, fresh produce, and handcrafted goods, giving us a true taste of Dominican culture. To make getting around even more fun, we rented golf carts—an adventure the kids absolutely loved!
Beyond the natural beauty and warm hospitality, I was fascinated by the Dominican Republic’s marketing and PR strategies. I observed these both before and during our stay. The country has done an excellent job establishing itself as a top travel destination. They launched a campaign called, “The Dominican Republic Has It All,” where they showcase everything from luxury resorts to rich cultural experiences. One social campaign cleverly featured images of Dominican scenery with captions like, “Tuscany? No, the Dominican Republic,” challenging perceptions in a fun, creative way. This approach encourages visitors to step beyond all-inclusive resorts and truly immerse themselves in the Dominican way of life. By sharing real travellers’ stories on social media, they built authentic connections that resonate—evident in the growing number of tourists visiting each year.
This wasn’t just a vacation for us; it was an opportunity to slow down, bond as a family, and deepen our appreciation for another country. The “work away” benefit helps you change your perspective. Working in a warm destination like Cap Cana brought a renewed sense of energy and focus to my daily tasks helping me approach work with a clearer mind and reduced stress. Experiencing the rich traditions, warm hospitality, and vibrant lifestyle taught me the value of slowing down and appreciating the moment. This benefit is more than just a perk; it’s a powerful way to foster personal growth, improve work-life balance,
and create lasting memories. It’s a reminder that stepping out of the usual routine can bring out the best in both work and life.
